Escaping Victimhood runs a residential programme of workshops, combining many different activities, to enable those traumatised by crime to move on from being victims to being survivors and so to reclaim their lives. It was the vision of Buckinghamshire Friend, Tim Newell. In 2007 he established Escaping Victimhood as a charity, which although independent of Quakers, has much ongoing Quaker support and involvement.
The workshops held are strongly influenced by principles of restorative justice and seek to meet the unmet needs in the most seriously affected victims. These include bereavement by murder or manslaughter, knife attacks, domestic violence or sexual assault, experiences which can affect their work, health and relationships.
Escaping Victimhood offers 4-day residential workshops, plus a follow-up day that takes place about 6 weeks later. The venues provide comfortable accommodation, good food, lovely gardens and a relaxing atmosphere. The workshop sessions are run by skilled and supportive facilitators.
